City tax dollars at work
The city supported tabloid (Damascus Observer) is celebrating its 34th monthly payment of $1,900.00 from the city of Damascus in April of 2009 and we wish to congratulate them. Ask Damascus filed their first initiative in April of 2006, calling for a vote before creating or increasing taxes, just days later (6/7/06) the city council started these monthly payments to the tabloid calling it “advertising”. Prior to June of 2006 a few much smaller payments were made to the tabloid and are not counted in the following tabulation of your tax dollars received.
Since the receipt of the first payment the tabloid has dutifully supported the Metro plan for the city and vilified all citizen initiatives. Many articles mostly by Dean Apostol were written regarding the three measures voted on in March of 2008 while no attempt was made to talk with the author of the measures.
When I was invited to write a guest opinion and did do so I found it to be heavily edited and accompanied with a rebuttal by the editor, editorials in opposition by members of the city council, stories against the measures and even a cartoon completely distorting a measure.
Tom Lichty has been informed I will not write in his subsidized publication again until I am assured he will print what I say without his touching it up.
Since that June, 2006 payment the tabloid has received regular monthly payments of $1,900.00 and “Ask Damascus” has been keeping a running total.
The tabloid has received $ 64,600 of your tax dollars !
